About Dudley Products, Inc.

HISTORY

The history of Dudley Products, Inc. reads very much like “the American Dream.” Stepping back into 1957, we begin the saga that ultimately led to the formation of a multi-million dollar haircare and cosmetics company, Dudley Products, Inc. The road to achievement can be slow and difficult, but the Dudley story is proof that dedication, hard work, and persistence does lead to success. It all began when Joe L. Dudley, Sr. invested $10 in a Fuller Products Sales Kit in 1957 and began the challenge of door-to-door selling in Brooklyn, NY.

In 1960, he met the spunky, intelligent woman who would later become his partner in business and life, Eunice D. Mosley. She was selling Fuller Products to earn money for college tuition. They fell in love and married in 1961. The following year they decided to concentrate their careers on a full-time basis with Fuller Products. Working with Mr. S.B. Fuller, one of the giants in African-American entrepreneurship, had a profound impact on the Dudleys.

In 1967, the Dudleys opened a Fuller Products Distributorship in Greensboro, NC. As their client base increased, there came a point when Fuller was unable to supply them with all the products they needed for their customers. This prompted them to venture into the product manufacturing area.

Initially, the products were made in their home where Mrs. Dudley and the children would package the products at night for Mr. Dudley and his sales force to distribute during the day. They later purchased rights to Rosebud Products and began selling the Rosebud Hair Pomade under the Dudley’s Scalp Special name. Being on a shoestring budget, they were forced to put the product in whatever used containers they could find after washing and sanitizing them.

By 1976, the Dudley’s sales force had grown to 400. The company included the Dudley Beauty School and a chain of beauty supply stores throughout the southeast. Dudley was deemed an entrepreneurial success. That same year Mr. Fuller asked them to join him in running Fuller Products. So the Dudleys relocated to Chicago where Mr. Dudley was appointed President and Mrs. Dudley assumed a significant role in the administrative and manufacturing areas.

Although their major focus was the rebuilding of Fuller Products, they continued the operation of Dudley Products. During this period, they established the partnership they still share with professional cosmetologists. The Dudley professional line of products was and still is sold only to licensed professionals.

In 1984, they returned to Greensboro to concentrate on rebuilding Dudley Products. They were successful at this endeavor and in 1986 they opened a new 37,000 square foot Corporate Headquarters and Manufacturing Facility. Dudley Cosmetology University (DCU) was launched in Kernersville, NC in 1989. DCU offers a General Cosmetology Program and Advanced Training courses for licensed professionals.

In 1989, buildings were constructed to house the DCU Cafeteria, Dudley Travel Agency, DCU Inn and the Yeates Center. In 1994, Dudley Products’ corporate and manufacturing divisions moved into an 80,000 square foot state of the art facility located in Kernersville, NC. Additionally, the desire for expansion was exemplified when Dudley Products, Inc. joined forces with foreign schools to develop programs for Zimbabwe, South Africa, Brazil, and a number of Caribbean countries.

PHILOSOPHY

Dudley manufactures more than 400 professional and retail hair care and personal care products. Unlike many products of this nature, the Dudley line of professional products is sold only to cosmetologists and barbers. The Dudley motto is “In Partnership with the Professional Cosmetologist” and this motto is taken very seriously. Dudley Products is also a business development leader and strives to help cosmetologists all over the world to build their businesses and secure a strong economic base in their communities. Dudley’s philosophy and commitment are as true today as in the beginning.

The Dudley vision is to see people succeed—to realize “The American Dream.”
